There are two instances in which Ellie realizes her family may have some racist tendencies. Ellie first thinks back to a time when she and Anne were in Central Park, and a Black man came running at them. Anne screamed, thinking he was going to attack them, but he was just out for a jog. Ellie wonders if Anne would have reacted the same way if the man had been white. Ellie then thinks about how Marion often says that all people are equal, since they all suffer. Ellie then wonders why, if everyone is equal, her family has no close relationships to Black families.
