There Was a Country
What was the result of the implementation of Decree No. 34 as noted in the memoir, There Was a Country?
.
.
Decree No. 34 was issued in a broadcast to the nation of Nigeria on May 24, 1966, by General Aguiyi-Ironsi. The decree virtually eliminated Nigeria’s federal government, replacing it with military rule. Just a month later, Ironsi was petitioned by the Northern Nigerian ruling class to revoke the unpopular decree. In an effort to gain support of his position as new leader of the nation, Ironsi toured the country to calm fears and uncertainty. Decree No. 34 became a moot point when Ironsi was arrested in July by the Northern Nigerian army and executed a short time later.
