What does Thomas's eczema symbolize ?

Thomas remains deeply conflicted about his mixed heritage and any possibility of belonging: “You’re from a people who took and took and took and took. And from a people taken. You were both and neither” (216). I think his eczema is an extension of this conflict. He is literally and metaphorically not comfortable in his own skin.
