The narrative unfolds from the first-person perspective of the author, who writes in present-tense of her experiences with pain and with transformation. This gives the narrative a sense of immediacy and intimacy, drawing readers into the moment-by-moment experiences the author describes. These stylistic choices seem to have emerged from the author’s intention, identified in both the Preface and the Epilogue – i.e., that readers engage with her stories as preludes to engaging with their own experiences of pain and transformation.
