Throughout the book, the author describes encounters with a number of general practitioners, specialists, and therapists who make various attempts at healing her physically, psycho-emotionally, or both. As she portrays them, her encounters with doctors are painful or ineffective, sometimes both. This leads to what she suggests is a general avoidance of doctors, and a reluctance to have faith that what they have to offer, any of them, will do her any good, or at least not cause her any more pain.
