One important recurring theme or motif in the novel is that of food. No matter the vocational setting and context for each new chapter’s events, throughout the entirety of the novel, the author’s descriptions of the narrator’s eating and dining habits feature heavily, as the narrator subliminally believes food will satisfy her deeper emotional longings. In each new work setting, the narrator takes particular pleasure in finding new restaurants and shops to buy food, and new recipes and foods to try out.
