The interaction area in the bonobo building has hard surfaces that are durable and easy to clean, although some of the floor is carpeted.

The area includes a research room for most interactions, but the bonobos are allowed anywhere in the interaction area, including the kitchen. The research room has a large glass window and a door that connects to the bonobo enclosure. The back of the hill and the climbing area are visible from the research room, plus part of the pond. The hill blocks the view between tourists and researchers, so each group feels alone with the apes. The research room has a whiteboard and an avatar who translates conversation into sign language.
