The dust storm destroys human technology and illustrates dominance of nature. When the storm first hits, during the night, Frankie watches as the dust erases stars from the sky, and the next day the plexiglass walls of the bonobo enclosure are covered in light tan. As the storm progresses, technology fails, and dust creeps in through the vents.
