Clothing choices throughout the novel are symbolic of each character's personality. Laurel's clothing is representative of her held-together demeanor, while Paul's clothing represents his slightly more free-spirited nature. Hanna's clothing choices are a reflection of her functionality. Poppy's clothing choices are a mask imposed onto her by her father as an extension of his own false exterior.
