At the end of the story, John faints upon his wife announcing that he cannot put her back behind the wallpaper. One possible interpretation of his fainting is the suggestion that his wife may have killed him. While feminists interpret this text as a condemnation of androcentric hegemony in the 19th century medical profession, this work can also be seen as Gilman's protest against the medical and professional oppression directed toward women during that time period.
