What surrounds the town of Bethel is the novel, The Year of the Witching?

The whole town is surrounded by the Darkwood, which is rumored to be haunted. Residents are not allowed to enter into the woods, and only the highest members of society are able to leave out the Hallowed Gate to visit and trade with the “heathen villages” of the outsiders.
