How does Pacy come up with the idea to write her book for the competition about ugly vegetables in the novel, The Year of the Dog?

It is while digging with Mom in the garden that Pacy discovers she should write her book about vegetables and her life. The discovery of the idea for the book is also the sowing and planting of the idea that Pacy will one day become a writer.
