Monk's Piece represents the final stage of Arthur's life. After suffering for years from the trauma of his time in Crythin Gifford, Arthur chooses a home secluded from society, yet close enough to another town-- much like Eel Marsh House. Like the widow, Alice Drablow, Arthur prefers to keep his grief bottled up inside and to essentially isolate himself from society.
