Kit is as different from the Woods as she can be. Having been raised in the tropics, enjoying the life of an aristocrat, having had slaves to attend to her every needs, she is the proverbial 'fish out of water'. Matthew sees her as a liability since she doesn't know how to act, dress, or even work in the fields. She is not a Puritan which is also a strike against her, and she has her grandfather's religious and political views.
