The tradesman out and he tells the children to go on without him. a more rushed escape to the exit tunnels as they are chased by guards. The author uses the sacrifice of the tradesman to give him redemption for his earlier misdeeds and as a way for the narrative to progress with the children finding themselves safely in the Fairy Kingdom.
