The newspaper is created to keep everyone informed after Cooter Calvert, grieving over Gene’s death, starts it to keep Elmwood Springs connected because he does not feel connected with Gene any longer. In the end, the newspaper is discontinued, and it is one of the first telltale signs that Elmwood Springs will not continue on.
