What is the importance of "The Mountain" in the novel, The White Woman on the Green Bicycle?

The Mountain is a large hill near the house George builds for his family. Sabine believes it looks like the figure of a woman, lounging on her side. Sabine carries on conversations with the “woman” and hates that George loves this “woman” more than he loves her and their children.
