The image of the baby in the bucket is a powerful one evoking the novel's themes of poverty and oppression. Balram’s reaction can clearly be seen as echoing Mr. Ashok’s actions earlier in choosing the smallest possible amount to give Balram for his wedding. This indicates that Balram has indeed turned the tables and become almost as cold as his former employer.
