Wedding vows represent an unbreakable promise, especially for the women of the novel. Elizabeth's mother urges Elizabeth to respect her wedding vows and not pry into the rebellion. All of the girls of the novel that marry are submissive to their husbands. Even Elizabeth, who starts the novel despising Henry, learns how to respect their wedding vows and support him.
