What is the importance of Lisa's crucifix necklace in the novel, The White Hotel?

Lisa's mother tore the crucufix off when she got married, as a symbol of leaving her old life behind. Lisa inherited the crucifix and wears it constantly. She has a habit of touching it whenever she lies. When Lisa dies at Babi Yar, a soldier rips it off her.
