In what way are birds symbolic of Maddy's mother in the novel, The Weight of Blood?

Maddy's mother wrote that she would fly to Maddy whenever she can. Just before the paint spills on Maddy in the barn, she gets the sense that birds are coming and something is trying to get her off stage. This is her mother trying to protect her.
