How does the author use flashback in the novel, The Way of Kings?

The author uses Kaladin's flashbacks to one of the Weepings when he was a child to show how slow rains that are not highstorms can symbolize the depression that lurks within him. The Weepings are a symbol of his depression and how it can appear every year and make Kaladin feel useless.
