One of the reasons why it is difficult for the reader to notice that there has been a change of location is the nature of the interior monologues. As we are being exposed to the thoughts of young children, the reader must be aware that their thoughts are not necessarily linear. For example, Bernard may mention that he and the others will be going for a walk and yet then have a succession of thoughts after the initial one, while the reader is never given an indication of whether the speaker has changed locations.
