What is significant about displaying the children in school in the novel's first section?

We learn that all of the characters, particularly the boys, have a love for and fascination with language. Susan in particular notes Bernard's control of language, though it is certainly clear that all the children seem to be equally capable. However, we also encounter Rhoda struggling with mathematics.
