Section 9 consists only of Bernard's monologue as he "sums up" his life story to an unnamed companion who he has met in a restaurant. It finally solidifies Bernard's role as the glue that holds the group together and his role as primary storyteller. It is also significant that Bernard no longer searches for the perfect word or phrase in his speech but rather holds a conviction for simple, effective story telling.
