Louis works as a clerk in London, and despite his promise as a student and writer, he appears to enjoy his line of work. He expresses his differences from Neville and Bernard by way of emphasizing his interests in philosophy, particularly Plato, and society. Furthermore, he articulates his disconnect from Bernard and Neville by distancing himself from what he calls the "individual" poetry of Lord Byron, whom both Neville and Bernard are fond of.
