As Bernard appears in Section 3, he is still being philosophically introspective. He struggles to write a letter to a girl he loves, and he is unable to undertake an action without fully fleshing out the motives behind the action. He struggles to find comfort in his identity because authenticity is of paramount importance to him. However, this is not meant to be pejorative. It simply means that Bernard is a very prudent man and wishes to make sure he is content with himself before he can honestly undertake any endeavor.
