Why does Jamie come home from school with a welt on his left wrist ?

One day Jamie comes home with welts on his wrist. Susan goes to the school and sees Jamie’s left hand is tied to the chair. The teacher won’t let him write left-handed because she says it’s a mark of the Devil.
