Ada's time with Susan taught her what things could be like. She experienced kindness, comfort, and encouragement. Mam was unable to give her these things because she simply didn't care.... Ada and Jaime were a weight she "had" to bear because she didn't have a choice. Susan cared for and came to love them for no other reason than the fact that they were lovable.
