One example of symbolism can be found in the green dress Mrs. Smith gives to Ada, which is a symbol of her affection. Because Ada does not believe she is worthy of anything beautiful she has a panic attack. Ada also cannot understand or accept affection because she still sees herself as the ugly, unloved girl that her mother always said that she was.
