Why does Anthony throw a key at Kate's feet rather than just handing it to her in the novel, The Viscount Who Loved Me?

Anthony throws this key at Kate’s feet intending to make her stoop, or bow, to pick it up. Even though Kate would technically not have been paying respect to Anthony with this body language, it would still be a sign of inferiority. He hopes to belittle her.
