Lady Robsart, a widower, is presented as a cruel and strict task mistress. She belittles and scolds her daughter for her poor choice of a husband and her apparent lack of backbone. Instead of supporting her and guiding Amy, the Lady Robsart spends her time berating her daughter and further undermining her confidence. She also absolutely loathes Robert, whom she sees as a fool fit for nothing apart from pretty compliments.
