Thorfinn Karlsefni, originally from Iceland, explored Vinland in 1010 A.D. in an attempt to form a permanent settlement there. He was a wealthy and talented sea merchant, who led a large number of men and women to the settlement but due to conflicts with natives, who they called the Skrælings, they decided to leave, regarding the land as unsafe.
