The use of the first person point of view creates a sense of both connection and estrangement in the poem. The first person perspective reminds the reader that this fantasy is rooted in a real person's psychology. However, the flexible use of it also allows the speaker to imagine things that would never be possible in reality. It is therefore not just a fantasy about sexual closeness; it is also a fantasy about the flexibility of selfhood and of different ways one can imagine the self – as growing and changing, like a vine.
