How does Ingraham deceive Maxine in the novel, The Vig?

Ingraham convinces Maxine to give up acting and to run away with him once they receive the insurance payoff. However, instead of running off with Maxine, Ingraham takes his share of the money and plans to fake his death and run off to Mexico. When Maxine shows up at his barge the night he plans to fake his death, Ingraham kills her so he can take her share of the money too and escape without her.
