Throughout her time in her little house on the embankment, Lamentations begins to prepare for her death, and thus to meditate upon her life. While the place gives her shelter, it is also the setting for many of her revelations in the novel's final chapters. In this location, Lamentations begins to realize that "To be alone and surviving is not the same as being alive" (246). The house therefore acts as a liminal space between life and death. It is indeed in this location where Lamentations ultimately dies.
