How does the household's opinion of the Minister change over the course of his marriage to the Mistress in the novel, The Vaster Wilds?

Shortly after the mistress's first husband, the goldsmith, dies, the mistress remarries the minister. At first, the minister is "well loved by the household" (225). However only a few "short weeks" into his tenure as "new master," the minister becomes "disliked, then hated" (225).
