How does Lamentations' mistress excuse her son's behavior toward Lamentations in the novel, The Vaster Wilds?

Even after the mistress discovers what that her son has tormented and abused Lamentations, she does nothing to stop him. She takes pity on Lamentations but excuses her son by assuring Lamentations her that all women, including herself, have suffered similar forms of violence.
