Who is Ettie Shafter in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's, The Valley of Fear?

Ettie Shafter is Jacob Shafter's daughter. She and McMurdo fall in love, but the couple faces many challenges as a result of Baldwin's claim on her. When McMurdo eventually reveals himself as Birdy Edwards, Ettie flees the valley with him. She later dies in California.
