Why does Dientje take the girls to the underground hiding place when Johan leaves the house in the novel, The Upstairs Room?

Dientje, Johan's wife, is frightened by the Germans and the thought of being caught. It seems that she loves the girls very much, but she takes them to the underground hiding place when Johan leaves the house because she is worried about being found out.
