To Julie, Bangladesh was "filled with ugliness and beauty, suffering and joy, poverty and generosity" (169). It represents strength in spite of adversity. It reminds her of her cancer experience. She thinks she has a sign when she is walking to a cancer appointment, and a woman from Bangladesh stops her to ask for directions to the same hospital.
