The charcoal that Havildar Charat Singh sends Bakha to fetch symbolizes inclusion and acceptance. Bakha has idolized Singh for years and Singh’s willingness to touch the charcoal after it has been touched by an untouchable fills Bakha with joy. He is so used to the abuse and unkindness of the villagers that the tolerance of an important man makes him feel valued.
