The Escape is the cruise ship on which Greta spends eight consecutive days. The ship is the primary setting for the novel. Over the months preceding her mother's death, Helen planned the cruise trip with her husband Conrad to celebrate their fortieth wedding anniversary. In the wake of her death, Conrad's son and Greta's brother Asher encourage Greta to take Helen's place on the cruise. Asher tells Greta that it will be good for her to be there for Conrad. He separately tells Conrad it will be good for Greta to get away from her life in New York.

Over the course of the eight days that Greta spends on board the Escape she undergoes a series of unexpected experiences that encourage her towards reconciliation with her past and instill her with new confidence for her future. She not only meets and grows close with Ben, but discovers new closeness with her father. The ship literally transports her from her life on land and helps her to achieve emotional healing.
