What was considered the foundation of a TOE and why did it go out of fashion?

The TOE was the Theory of Everything, and its foundation was superstrings. Superstrings were very fashionable to consider until 1985 when they out of style and were considered insufficient as an idea. The reason superstrings went out of fashion is because the five possible theories surrounding them had problems that could not be reconciled.
