What idea about the galaxies did Einstein never take seriously?

Einstein never took idea of the Big Bang explosion seriously. The idea claims that since galaxies are far apart now, they must have been closer together earlier in time. However, Penrose and Hawking later demonstrated that the theory of general relativity suggests the Big Bang actually occurred.
