What changed about the way we view zero point fluctuations in the 1940s?

Richard Feynman, Julian Schwinger and Shin'ichiro Tomonaga, in the 1940s, worked on the idea of zero point fluctuations which had to do with stationary objects and energy. These physicists refused to accept any sort of infinite energy hypothesis. They discovered a way to generate zero point fluctuations instead.
