How does the author use allusion in the novel, The Tin Drum?

One example of allusion can be found in the section where Oskar first encounters his friend Vittlar. When they first meet, Vittlar is reclining in the fork of an apple tree in a garden near the Rhine, very much as the snake reclined in the Garden of Eden.
