Why did Grandpa Meagram first plant oak trees in the novel, The Time Traveler’s Wife?

Grandpa Meagram planted the oak trees as a memorial for Grandma Meagram's brother, who died in the Second World War. When Uncle Teddy died in battle in the 1940's, three more trees were planted.
