John Divney is a corrupt ,am. He is in charge of the narrator's farm and pub while the narrator is at away at school, and when the narrator returns, Divney makes excuses to stay on the farm and take over everything the narrator has. Divney siphons money off the pub and shirks his duties around the farm. He robs the pub's customers while they are drunk. Sadly, the narrator allows Divney get away with his crookedness, so he can be left alone to work on his review of the philosopher de Selby.
