The beginning of the novel has a lot of flashbacks in time, to both Clare’s childhood, marriage and travels. Van den Berg spends the majority of this part unraveling the character of Clare and why she is the way she is. The Fingernail is appropriately named because this section develops Clare's odd habits and off-beat view on the world.
